Dead miles: the hidden cost eating your delivery pay

The miles after the drop that nobody pays you for — how to audit yours in 30 seconds and five fixes that work.

What dead miles are

You accept an order: 4 miles to the restaurant, 6 miles to the customer. The app shows 10 miles and pays accordingly. Then you drive 7 miles back empty to the hotspot where the orders are. You drove 17 miles. You got paid for 10. Those 7 unpaid miles are dead miles — and they're the silent killer of driver pay because no screen ever shows them to you.

The 30-second audit

For your next shift, write down two numbers: every mile the app "counts" (offer miles), and your actual odometer miles for the whole shift. Divide app miles by real miles.

If the ratio is under 0.7, nearly a third of your driving is unpaid. Most drivers who run this audit for the first time are shocked — in a bad way.

Five ways to kill dead miles

1. End your dash where the orders are. Driving home empty through dead zones is the most common dead-mile source. If you're done, you're done — but don't take one more order that strands you.

2. Stop accepting strand-you drops. A $9 order that drops you 8 miles from civilization isn't a $9 order. It's a $9 order plus 8 unpaid miles. The $/mile math has to include the trip back.

3. Learn your city's reset points. Every market has 2–3 spots where orders cluster. Between orders, drift toward them instead of sitting still in a dead zone.

4. Batch the direction, not just the pay. Two decent orders heading the same direction beat one great order heading into the void.

5. Track it weekly. The ratio only improves if you watch it. One line in your notes app per shift: app miles vs. real miles.
